How much does flight school cost?

Last checked November 5, 2026. General information, not flight-planning or legal advice.

Flight school for a professional pilot, from no experience through the commercial pilot certificate and usually the flight instructor certificates, costs about $90,000 to $124,000 in the 2026 program totals that five schools publish on their own websites. Pay-as-you-go stage prices from two smaller schools add up to less, about $52,000 to $80,000 to the commercial certificate by our estimate, partly because they cover less and stop sooner. One of the two pages is undated with a 2025 footer, so confirm its rates.

Each school puts a different list of items inside its price, so this guide sets out what each total covers and what to check on deposits and loans. Prices were checked on November 5, 2026. If you only want a private pilot license, our pilot training cost guide covers that line by line.

Flight school cost by program type

The table groups the published prices we found by the kind of school. "Estimate" marks our own arithmetic from a school's published stage prices, shown in full further down.

Every path also needs an FAA medical certificate, which several of these prices leave out. The FAA lists aviation medical examiners on its medical certification page.

Our estimates from stage prices

These are ESTIMATES, not quotes. They add up each school's own stage prices. Rainier does not publish a total. California Flight School publishes a $65,000 to $75,000 total for its seven-step path through the flight instructor course, which is a different end point from the estimate below.

Why the totals differ

What sits inside the price

The largest swing comes from fees. ATP's own guide says examiner and knowledge test fees come to about $12,000 from zero experience and are paid separately. Thrust and Acron put exam fees inside the price. Added to ATP's tuition with its own listed gear ($2,005) and app ($200) figures, that gives about $138,200 before housing, by our estimate. Thrust's $120,000 already includes the checkrides and a headset but excludes the medical, an iPad and housing.

Where the program ends

Some totals stop at the commercial certificate; others go on to one or two instructor certificates and a multi-engine rating. Thrust publishes both: $101,500 to commercial and $120,000 with both instructor certificates. Compare quotes only at the same end point.

Package price or hourly rates

ATP, Thrust and Acron sell a fixed package. Rainier and California Flight School publish hourly estimates, so the bill follows the hours flown. A package caps the price only for its included hours. Thrust says no further fees apply provided you finish each course inside the hours included, and ATP says it may offer extra training at an additional cost if reallocating hours is not enough.

Average hours or minimum hours

Embry-Riddle, for example, bases its flight course estimates on minimum course requirements and tells students to budget more. South Dakota State prices at average hours and says to use those numbers, not its required (minimum) flight charges. Its required flight charges for the VA curriculum total $65,120, against the $90,827 average. Thrust warns that multiplying a rate by the FAA minimum "produces a number that is always too low."

Part 141 or Part 61

Part 61 and Part 141 count minimum hours differently, as our pilot training time guide explains. California Flight School's stage plan builds time toward the 250 hours of 14 CFR 61.129(a), which is why time building appears as its own line.

College credits, degrees and the restricted ATP

A college program adds tuition for academic credits on top of flight fees. Tarrant County College charges $74 per semester hour for Tarrant County residents and $315 for out-of-state students (Fall 2026). Some aviation degrees can lower the hours needed for a restricted airline transport pilot certificate: 1,000 hours for a qualifying bachelor's degree with 60 aviation credit hours, and 1,250 hours for a qualifying associate's degree or a bachelor's with 30 to 59 credit hours, against 1,500 hours otherwise (14 CFR 61.160). If a school says its program qualifies, ask which part of that rule applies and whether the degree is in the price.

Deposits, prepayment and refunds

When you pay matters too, because money paid ahead is at risk if a school closes or you stop training.

In California, a flight instruction provider is exempt from the state's private postsecondary education law only if it does not require contracts of indebtedness and does not "require or accept prepayment" of instruction costs above $2,500 (Cal. Educ. Code 94874(j)). California's Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education has cited a flight school for prepaid courses above that amount. A school outside that exemption needs state approval to operate, so in California a large prepayment request is worth a question.

Paying for it: financing with caution

The academies we checked point students to loans, and two say financing can cover the entire cost. Read the full terms of any loan before signing. Ask whether the money goes to the school in stages or all at once, what happens to it if you stop, whether it covers living costs, and when repayment starts. We don't name or recommend lenders.

Veterans' benefits have limits. Thrust says VA benefits apply only at its Addison campus and from the instrument rating on. Embry-Riddle says VA pays only for the hours in its Training Course Outlines, with any extra paid by the student. College students may be able to use financial aid toward flight fees; Embry-Riddle allows aid in excess of tuition, fees and room and board to be used for training.

How to compare two flight school quotes

  1. Match the end point. Price both schools to the same certificates and ratings.
  2. List what is excluded. Add examiner fees, knowledge tests, the medical, gear and apps to any price that leaves them out.
  3. Add living costs. Housing, food and transport for the length of the program are outside every total above.
  4. Check the hours. Ask how many hours the price includes and what an extra hour costs.
  5. Check the date. Use a price page dated this year, or get the figure in writing.

To track logged hours against a package, use the flight time calculator. For the commercial stage on its own, see our guide to commercial pilot license cost.
